Practical Solutions: Intranet Usability: navigation

Good navigation serves several purposes. Not only does the navigation help users to "navigate," or find their way around the site but also helps them to know what is on the site and where they are within in it.

Navigation should

  • Give users an easy way back to the home page
  • Be consistent and visible throughout the intranet
  • Demonstrate hierarchy and location

Often navigation is broken down into main sections with subsections visible only within each main section.
